SONDER Build Out Week 3
This week’s SONDER build out is starting right where we left off, getting ready to finish off ground plumbing with concrete. Ernest and Mike also started building out the bar while electrical, drywall and wood-staining continued on in the background. It’s so fun to see it all unfold, but there’s still so much to coordinate and get done.
Early Monday morning we hit the ground running with a fresh delivery of thick, wet cement. All hands on deck to get this done as quick as we could, so both Ernest and Pop were on it with Mike (our contractor) and his son. I let the guys do the dirty work, but it was super cool to see the truck backing up and the cement pouring on SnapChat. Follow us on “sondercoffee” if you’re not already to see things happening *almost* live– and from Pop’s eyes too!
Building a Coffee Bar
There isn’t much on building a coffee bar online. Sigh, but that’s Dreamalatte’s story right, figuring out how to start a coffee shop from the ground up in every way! Ernest and Mike are putting their brains and skills together to make this happen, also in collaboration with our architect’s design. Working off the plans, we started measuring the bar and marking all the dimensions, then used that to build a sturdy frame out of 2×4’s.
Testing it out with imaginary lattes. Once we made sure the dimensions matched up to reality and made some minor improvements, we got to work on the frame.
Putting up Drywall
Luckily we’re not doing much with walls– no tearing down, and only putting up a couple for the bathroom. This really keeps things easier with planning and permits as well. Can’t wait to see it nice and pretty.
Staining wood tables
Thursday was Ernest’s birthday, which I’m thankful for, because that meant I survived on donuts all day. Our friend Lisa brought a bunch on her way to work, stopping by with her kiddos to show them all that goes on behind the scenes of getting something like a coffee shop done. It really does put things into perspective to learn that your favorite places don’t pop up overnight, and various people work really hard to make things happen! Then Ian&Katie, some of our favorite people stopped by later with more goodies– aren’t nice people the best kind of people? It’s the little things.
Still playing around with good stains to narrow down a color for our tables. I’m getting closer, but having a hard time getting our white oak the color I’m envisioning it to be. It will come…
Thank you guys for being part of our SONDER build out story– love having your support as we’re getting closer to opening.
