Time has come for the SONDER build out–crazy right? I had no idea how we’d even make it to this point, but here we are, and still pressing forward. One day at a time, little by little, big progress is made. We’d love to share some sneak peaks of our first week so you can see SONDER come to be with us, how about it?
Brick Accent Wall
Our design is pretty minimal, but we wanted a brick accent wall from the get-go, and the space was just beggggging for one! It was a perfect fit, but a lot of work for a girl that’s been researching on her computer this past year. Grout and glitter nails are not best friends, but it was all in the name of good coffee, so we got to work. We found some great thin brick, grouted it up, and we’re ready to paint.
Custom White Oak Furniture
We decided we wanted to build our own custom furniture to match our space, and found some great white oak to work with. I didn’t realize Ernest had such a carpenter gene in him until starting this shop, but it’s cool to see how much hands-on work he wants to put in everything. He and our contractor Mike have great ideas for the custom coffee bar and furniture. Can’t wait to see how it comes together.
We were so excited to have wood highlighted in our shop, even from the initial vision board. Here’s what we wrote at the time:
“Just as each plant, each piece of raw wood is unique and has a story to tell, so do we. And it is the differences, imperfections and rawness of who we are that makes our story something to share. It is the imperfections of the tree; the broken limbs, faults and inconsistencies that result in a beautiful pattern unlike any other.”
Wow, plumbing is intense. And we’re not even plumbing yet– we’ve got to cut concrete first. Did you know there’s dirt underneath the concrete? Of course there is, I just have never thought about that before. It took a while finding a plumber too, and it happened by accident. We were talking to a plumber who gave us a good bid, but then happened to text another plumber thinking it was the same person because they had the same name. Either way, they ended up coming to the space and agreed to do it on a better timeline for us. Funny how things work, and yes this is a lot of work friends.
Kevin is a great electrician, he sure knows what he’s doing. Here he is working hard, always prepared, and doing good job. You don’t even realize how much goes into a coffee shop… as you’re drinking your coffee, reading a book, you wouldn’t think about the person that wired electricity to different outlets throughout the room. The behind the scenes work is crazy. And from a business perspective, it’s all these little crazy things that add up.
Well, there’s week one for you. More pictures to come next week. Thanks so much for following along in our coffee shop’s story!
